Key Stage 2 (KS2) - Lower

Key Stage 2 (KS2) covers the four years from Year 3 to Year 6 and includes the Year 6 SATS. The Maths Mum® has separated this learning into two sections:

  • Lower KS2 - Years 3 & 4

  • Upper KS2 - Years 5 & 6

The principal focus of mathematics teaching in Lower KS2 is to ensure that pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the 4 operations, including number facts and the concept of place value.  This should ensure that pupils develop efficient written and mental methods and perform calculations accurately with increasingly large whole numbers.

At this stage, pupils should develop their ability to solve a range of problems, including with simple fractions and decimal place value. Teaching should also ensure that pupils draw with increasing accuracy and develop mathematical reasoning so they can analyse shapes and their properties, and confidently describe the relationships between them. It should ensure that they can use measuring instruments with accuracy and make connections between measure and number.

By the end of Year 4, pupils should have memorised their multiplication tables up to and including the 12-multiplication tables and show precision and fluency in their work.

From the 2019/20 academic year onwards, all state-funded maintained schools and academies (including free schools) in England will be required to administer an online multiplication tables check (MTC) to year 4 pupils. The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will help schools to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided.

Schools will have a 3-week window to administer the MTC. Teachers will have the flexibility to administer the check to individual pupils, small groups or a whole class at the same time.

Pupils should read and spell mathematical vocabulary correctly and confidently, using their growing word-reading knowledge and their knowledge of spelling.

The Maths Mum® Lower KS2 Course is 2½ hours long and is for Year 3 & 4 parents, when the maths becomes a little bit less fun and more of a challenge.  It is very important that parents don’t force ‘their way’ of doing things on to their child as this can cause confusion and lead to anxiety.  KS2 Lower Course fees are £50 per person.

The Lower KS1 course covers all aspects of the curriculum - how it is taught to our children, the key building blocks, important check points and lots of tips & hints to help your child succeed.

The maths curriculum is split into seven key sections (see below)
