Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) includes learning in Nursery and Reception Year - children from 0-5 years old.

The EYFS states that for the early learning goal of NUMBERS the ‘expected’ level of learning and development is - Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number.  Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer.  They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

The EYFS states that for the early learning goal of SHAPE, SPACE AND MEASURES the ‘expected’ level of learning and development is - Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems.  They recognise, create and describe patterns.  They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

The Maths Mum® has created booklet for end of EYFS which contains the goals, a detailed checklist and a list of fun, interactive activities to allow you to assess your child against these goals. You can purchase it as a hardcopy or downloadable pdf from the shop.
